Every year Brackenstown has a sports day. Our sports day consists of two days. These days take place near the end of the year. One day for the third and forth classes and the other for fifth and sixth classes.

Each class is given a colour and every person including the teacher dresses in that colour. Children make banners etc. to cheer on their own classes.

Points are given for good behaviour, winning events and cheering the loudest. Our Sports Day takes two days to set up and has eight events such as spud and spoon, sack race, wheel barrow race, 3 legged race, sprint race, long distance race, slow bicycle race and tug of war. Prizes are given to the classes with the most points such as a night off homework. The main aim of these events is for good FUN and ENJOYMENT. The person who sets all these events is Ms Begley. SHE IS GREAT!

BASKETBALL

In our school a teacher called Ms Mc Govern started basketball a year and 2 months ago. It is a mixed team. They play five aside. So many people wanted to be on the team they had to pick names out of a hat. It starts back up every year with new players. They have not won any big games yet. They train weekly with 5th and 6th classes only.

Winning Girl's GAA team 2000

On the sixteenth of May 2000, St. Cronan's Girls Gaelic Football Team won the Fingal League Finals in Parnell Park. The score was 3-7 to 0-2.

The teachers and pupils from each school travelled by coach to support us. We bet the reigning champions St. Mary’s of Ashbourne. Every member of both teams received a gold medal. St. Cronan's received the Fingal Cup for the year, which we had to defend this season..

When the girls team arrived back at the school we were surprised to see the whole school there ready to celebrate our win. There was a trophy case made for the cup, which is displayed at the main entrance of our school.

After a ten year wait we all think this win was well deserved.

This year because of the Foot and Mouth, the Fingal League was played as a Blitz. Our girls and boys team both took part in the Blitz. Once again our girls team did very well, reaching the semi-finals against St. Mary's, Ashbourne. This time it was St. Mary's who won and they went on to play in the finals in Parnell Park.

Next year we hope to return to Parnell Park and maybe even beat our rivals from Ashbourne!
