Chorus Sports Channel

Monday, 2nd October 2000 marked the launch of a new local service for Chorus Communication customers - the Chorus Sports Channel, "Ireland's first channel dedicated to sports". Chorus Sports has developed out of the old Local Channel service provided by Cork Communications since the early-to-mid-80s. In early 1999 The Local Channel began concentrating its filmed programming on sports, particularly inter-club GAA games - something proving very popular in Munster (witness the Limerick pirate station RLOTV which also concentates on this). With the relaunch of Irish Multichannel as Chorus, the station has now offically declared itself a Sports Channel, although certain elements of the old Local Channel, such as the noticeboard service and Chorus Subscriber Information, should be preserved under the new format - although there are apparently no community announcements at present.

NEWS - CHORUS SPONSOR SHANNON RFC - Chorus Sports will get its first live programming - live coverage of two Ireland "A" rugby internationals in Thomond Park, Limerick, on 15 November 2000 against South Africa and 23 March 2001 against England - as a result of a sponsorship deal between Chorus and Shannon RFC. The deal also includes a highlights package for all of Shannon's All-Ireland League matches which will be shown on Chorus Sports.

Available initally to ex-Cork Communications, Westward Cable, and Horizon TV customers, the service will also be available to all Chorus Digital customers 24 hours a day - of course, filmed programming only counts for a small amount of this...It appears the old seperate Cork and Limerick services have been merged into one, for filmed programmes at least- with Limerick and Cork each providing some programming to the new channel.

A LOOK AT THE CHORUS SPORTS CHANNEL...
Thanks to Kieran in Cork for these pictures and the schedule above - he also brought to my attention the launch of Chorus Sports...

Chorus welcomes viewers to its new Sports Channel

One of the programmes on the channel - welcome to the home of Munster gaelic football. (And an ever increasing amount of rugby)

One of the adverts. Note the Chorus DOG - this seems to be permanently etched into the channel, even Local Noticeboard sections.
