NTL Digital - A Guided Tour

home
Go Digital

Let us take you on a guided tour through the ntl: digital software as seen in Ireland. There are actually two different NTL digital systems about. The EPG here is that used in Ireland (NI and ROI) and was developed by NTL, and runs on the PowerTV OS platform, on a Pace STB. A second EPG is used in the UK on ex-CWC systems. Both are planned to be replaced by a single EPG in the near future, Liberate 1.2. (It is not known wheter the ROI systems will also be upgraded.)

The ex-CableTel EPG got a new look in February 2001, incorporating a personal planner ("My Diary"), a new look for the channel listings, and some other new features. It was unvieled in NI in mid-May.. Interactive services were also unvieled with this version, see below. These are current available in Northern Ireland only.

Your digital day (or night) begins with a push of the TV Guide button to see what's on. Note the new green look

With the channel list you can easily find the channel you're looking for. In the south, RTE 1 will be channel 101. They still list BBC 1 NI as "BBC Ulster" and UTV as "Ulster TV"...

The new programme list view is rather more convienent than the old look.

The new OSD contains only cosmetic changes from the old look

More information about whats on now...

Front Row is pretty much the same as before.

Nothing on? Well why not order a movie from Front Row. Unfortunately, nobody saw fit to get rid of what must be a very annoying trailer window (In the Republic, it shows TV3 for some strange reason).

Choose Widescreen or the more regular narrowscreen. Subtitles are also now available

This is what happens if you don't pay for a channel..

The reminders section has been revamped into "My Diary"..

NTL INTERACTIVE

Interactive features are now available from NTL NI including BBC TEXT

NTL Interactive's main index allows you to access the service's main features

You can access a walled garden of internet sites here.

News from several providers - none of which are from Northern Ireland (or the Republic) is available,

The NTL version of BBC TEXT looks a lot better than the SkyDigital version, in my opinion.

Excellent graphics from BBC TEXT Weather.
